Freedom Aloft Balloon Festival
The Freedom Weekend Aloft hot air balloon festival is closing due to lack of attendance. Due to low attendance, the festival is filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It started as a backdrop for the 1982 movie “Hot Heir” but never made it to local theaters. The festival was once one of the top attractions in the Southeast. It was even featured on ESPN and The Today Show, though attendance has decreased over the past few years.
The festival is a unique event that features 70+ colorful balloons and fun-filled activities, like a Frisbee Dog contest, vintage car shows, and concerts. This event is held alongside Memorial Day and is scheduled to return in 2021. The festival is a charity event that promotes ballooning and is sponsored by the Teton Valley Balloon Rally, a non-profit organization that works to keep ballooning alive and well.
If you are traveling to New Mexico, consider booking your flights at least two months in advance. If you haven’t been to the ABQ Balloon Fiesta before, you can take one of the same flights before Balloon Fiesta. The flight will be similar to a normal flight, but you will see the same cityscape and landscape. The mass ascension mornings are the most exciting as they are the most spectacular.

The event offers an up close look at the balloons’ workings. The event includes mass ascensions at dawn, balloon glows at night, and a grand ball. It’s truly a magical experience.
The festival features free balloon rides for schoolchildren. The Balloon Rally starts with a sunrise liftoff, when thirty-five or more hot air balloons take off into the clear, early morning sky above Taos. Saturday afternoon features the Balloon Parade, where participants dress up in their best costumes. This parade is the perfect way to celebrate Halloween! Check out the schedule for more details.
The event is held behind the Taos County Courthouse, which is one hour and forty minutes from San Francisco. The weather forecast is for mostly sunny skies and a high of 58 to sixty degrees. The Great Reno Balloon Race features 100 hot air balloons competing for cash prizes. While most spectators just enjoy the ascent, you may be interested in watching the pilots as they compete for cash prizes. The balloons in Reno are a mix of specialty balloons, which include Humpty Dumpty, Keystone Willy, and more. A few special balloons will punctuate the race field, too.
