A trip to Coweta County would not be complete without a stop at Leaf and Bean Coffee. This local coffee shop is a nighttime lounge that specializes in handcrafted coffee drinks. The shop also serves breakfast and lunch with a large variety of pastries and over 20 yards of loose leaf coffee. Leaf and Bean Coffee has been serving locals and tourists alike since 1996. Located just off Interstate 75 in Coweta County, Georgia, Leaf and Bean has been a favorite local spot for decades.
The new owner, Jim McWilliams, has renamed Leaf and Bean to make it more convenient for local residents. The new coffee shop serves a variety of coffee flavors as well as teas. In addition to coffee and tea, Leaf and Bean also offers a selection of sandwiches, salads and desserts, all of which are made from organic ingredients. McWilliams has recently applied for a liquor license for Leaf and Bean, so he can offer guests a variety of after-dinner beverages.

McRitchie Hollis Museum
The McRitchie Hollis Museum in rural Coweta County, Georgia, is home to a special exhibit dedicated to the community’s women. This exhibit, titled “CoWEta Women at Work,” celebrates the volunteer and club work of women in the area. The museum is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 9am to 4:30pm, and by appointment on Saturday and Sunday. The exhibit is curated by Emily Kimbell, director of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. She is a writer, director of the Coweta-Newnan Historical Society, and a member of local theatre and local history organizations.
The McRitchie-Hollis Museum is operated by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. It was originally built for a wealthy society couple in 1937, but today serves as the headquarters for the Coweta-Newnan Historical Society. The museum’s collection includes African-American artifacts and genealogy workrooms. It’s located in a restored shotgun-style house near the Farmer Street Cemetery, one of the largest slave cemeteries in the South. The museum is open on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Another museum in Coweta County is the McRitchie Hollis House, restored by Headley Construction after a bequest. The museum aims to preserve the grand homes of the 1930s and 1940s. The museum also serves as a center of knowledge for local history, and contains Native American and World War II exhibits, as well as period clothing and decorative arts.
Battle of Brown’s Mill
The Battle of Brown’s Mill was a key Civil War battle, fought on July 30, 1864 in Coweta County, Georgia. The Confederate and Union cavalry fought for control of the area, with McCook’s Union cavalry ultimately losing the battle. McCook’s column had been on a daring raid to cut off the Union’s communications in southern Georgia. But the Confederates’ victory in this battle forced Union General William T. Sherman to lay siege to Atlanta.
The Battle of Brown’s Mill was one of the largest cavalry battles of the Atlanta Campaign. The battle features multiple aspects of the action, including Confederate mounted cavalry under Gen. Joseph Wheeler, the 18th Indiana Light Artillery, and the Federal Cavalry under Gen. E.M. McCook. Besides the actual battle, the site also features interpretive panels that show the cost of the war on the civilian population.

The first county seat for Coweta County was Bullsboro, Georgia, located about two and a half miles east of Newnan. The Inferior Court of Coweta County chose the present site of Newnan in 1828. The site was identified as Land Lot 25, Fifth Land District, containing 2021/2 acres. The county bought this land from Charles Connally in 1827 for $100. The first courthouse was built in 1829 by Captain W.H. Hitchcock.
