If you want to experience the energy of a small town, Wimberley should definitely be on your list of day trips from Austin. It’s located at a driving distance of around 45 minutes. It is small but offers lots of interesting things to do and see.
For starters, check out the swimming pools. These natural beauty are truly stunning. Blue Hole as well as Jacob’s Well were both places I visited and had a great time.
The water is warmest during the summer months. You can still visit them all year long and enjoy the fresh air, nature and beauty.
Another interesting spot is the “Bootiful Wimmerley” trail. Basically, it represents a walk during which you see 48 artistic boots. These boots are decorated with local artists’ artwork, making them a fascinating sight.
While this may seem strange to some, I enjoyed following the trail and searching for boots in the town. There is a map that you can use to locate all the boots.
Last but not least, remember that the Wimberley market is held in the town between March and December. You can shop for antiques, clothing, food and other items at the market.
It takes place on the first Saturday of each month. This market is open to all who visit the town during this time of year.
Dripping Springs
This is one of the most popular day trips from Austin. It offers so many activities that you can fill your day.
After driving there for about 35 minutes out of Austin, you can start the day at the historic district. The amazing architecture found around the area was incredible to me.
I suggest a quick drive to the natural parks or pools. Hamilton Pool is a great place to take a dip. You should reserve the Hamilton Pool before you arrive.
Fresh in a good mood, you can visit Reimers Ranch Park next to take a stroll among the greenery. There were some great photos taken by me.
Finally, you can finish the adventure at one of the local restaurants or breweries with a glass of beer and a delicious dinner.
Lockhart
Speaking of meals, Lockhart is a serious contender for winning the title ‘the capital of barbecue’. The many restaurants in the area are the main reason for this.
What’s even more amazing is that they all have great food. The barbecue was delicious, and I had the pleasure of eating in one. Lockhart friends told me about other great restaurants.
Some of the most popular include Smitty’s and Chisholm Trail BBQ. If you’re looking for delicious food in Austin, this is where you need to be.
But food is not all that this place has to offer. You can even ride a horse on a guided tour. Also, you’ll find amazing scenery while hiking along the trails.
It has a golf course, and a swimming pool that you can use to cool off and relax. You should also consider shopping at the numerous shops or attending events, which are often held to celebrate holidays or just to have fun.

I completely understand that you may be interested in just day trips from Austin. You can stay a little longer in San Antonio.
This is because there’s so much to see in San Antonio that it would be foolish to try to do everything in 24 hours. Walking is my favorite way to experience a city or place.
San Antonio is the perfect place to do this. The River Walk, which is three miles long, is located along the San Antonio River. There are many attractions that can be enjoyed by all ages.
If you’re traveling with children or families, there are many educational and adventurous attractions such as Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld.
History fans will also find something in San Antonio. You can see the rich history of the city at places such as the Alamo and the Spanish Governor’s Palace. The distance to Austin is less that half an hour.
McKinney Falls
This gem is located very close to Austin, making it a great spot for a day trip. It’s a peaceful, quiet spot that is ideal for people who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Basically, this is a park spread over 700 acres with many trails for hiking and walking as well as exciting swimming and fishing places like the Onion Creek. It was a wonderful place to visit with amazing animals and plants.
I also discovered that this park started operating in 1976 and since then the falls have been among the top attractions of people that come to Austin.
Moreover, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you should know that there are as many as 81 camping spots in the park where you can stay in nature during the whole day and even extend your stay. Are you looking for activities that your entire family can enjoy?
You’ll be thrilled to learn that treasure hunting is possible through the many ranger programs. This activity is suitable for all ages.
Lake Travis
I really like being near water, so when my friend suggested Lake Travis, I had to check it out. It is a wonderful place to be.
It’s easy to see why it is one of the most popular lakes in the state. It has so much to offer, from its clear waters to its scenic surroundings.
I spent the entire day swimming, exploring nature and trying out new water sports. Water-skiing was something I tried for the first time.
Not to mention the amazing experience of walking along the shoreline, with hills covered with different flowers. The wonderful scent is still evident in my nostrils, I believe.

Johnson City
Many people told me that this city and Wimberley have some things in common. Both cities have many interesting things to offer and are worth visiting.
If you are traveling with children, the Science Mill of the Hill Country is a great choice. This is why it’s a top attraction.
There are interactive educational exhibitions that are both fun and informative. You will learn new information about different topics while having a lot of fun.
This is not all. I was especially excited to learn that the Science Mill is actually made in a mill for grist.
Adults can also enjoy delicious drinks at local wineries, distilleries and breweries. You can also plan to visit the parks and go on safari at the zoo if you have the time.
No matter what your goal is, Austin’s day trip will be unforgettable.
Luckenbach
Did you know that Luckenbach was once proclaimed to be a ghost town? This is because the small town had only three citizens in the 1960s.
Then, in 1970, a wealthy rancher bought it and it became an interesting location to visit if you are near Austin. It became famous because of Willie Nelson’s song about everyone being somebody and the town’s unusual history.
It’s a good idea to plan your day trips to Austin during weekends to take in the live country music.
I felt the authentic Texan spirit and life from the moment I stepped foot on the ground. It’s located in the Hill Country and is a tranquil place where you can forget all your worries and responsibilities, enjoy the ranch life, and have fun with the other visitors.

Enchanted Rock State Park – One of the Unmissable Day Trips from Austin
This place represents one of the largest naturally-formed rocks in the entire United States. Guess what? It’s close to Austin so I was able to see it with my own eyes.
I was astonished to see that the rocks go as high as 425 feet. These rocks are even more impressive when combined with the fascinating history of the natives who once lived there. Another fun fact is that the park has been proclaimed a Natural Landmark in 1970 and since then it’s open to visitors from all over the world.
The park offers many other attractions, in addition to the rock formations. There are numerous trails that can be used to walk or hike while taking in the beautiful scenery. You can also enjoy the beautiful birds of the area while you wait.
Marble Falls
Speaking of birdwatching, one more destination of the amazing day trips from Austin – Marble Falls offers such a unique opportunity. It’s also a sanctuary for wildlife so you might be able to catch some unique birds, as well as many other species, with your camera or goggles.
Particularly, keep an eye out for the golden-cheeked Warbler, which is a threatened bird that looks absolutely amazing. The photos that I took of it are still my treasures and I am always amazed when I see them.
If you want to take a break from the stress of the process, you can head to nearby water and get some fresh air. Then you can lie on the grass and enjoy the feeling.
This is just a small part of the many activities offered by this area. Marble Falls also offers many outdoor activities that will keep everyone entertained, including the elderly and children. You can pick your own berries at the Sweet Berry Farm, depending on the season and weather conditions.
You’ll return feeling energized with a basket full of delicious fruits. I know that I did. You can also just walk around and see what the natural world has to offer, without having to make any decisions. This is a great area to visit if you’re near Austin.

New Braunfels
Located just around 45 minutes from Austin, New Braunfels is one of the most popular summer destinations for Texans and tourists. This is due to many factors.
It’s a city full of interesting things. There is something for everyone, no matter if you are a history buff or a lover of adventure.
Of course, it’s impossible to do everything in one day. So, I’ll show you some of my favorite and let you decide which ones you like best. Let’s go if we can make a deal.
New Braunfels is well-known for its rivers. People wouldn’t come to New Braunfels if they weren’t for the rivers. People travel from all over the country to visit Guadalupe or Comal Rivers because of their fresh and cool waters.
You can kayak on them, or swim when it is warmer. The large Schlitterbahn Waterpark, which is also located in the town will delight water-lovers.
The attractions such as the lazy river, giant slides and large pools are great for the whole family. You can even relax on the beach.
Some Indoor Things To Do In New Braunfels
In case you like shopping more, I recommend checking out the numerous boutiques in the historic center of the city. This small town has many shops that offer unique items.
After all that shopping, grab a delicious meal at one of the many local restaurants. You can also see many performances, such as ballet and concerts, in the theatres.
So make sure to check out the schedules of the Brauntex Performing Arts Theaters and Circle Arts Theaters. Don’t forget to visit the many parks that offer long, quiet walks and wine tasting.
With all this information, it is clear why Austin should be on everyone’s list of must-see day trips.
Waco
The city, which is located in the heart of Texas, is quirky, beautiful, and fun in all the great ways reserved for memorable day trips from Austin. Magnolia Market was one of my favorite places there.
It has something for everyone, in the truest sense. If you are like me and want to buy souvenirs from everyone I meet, this is the place for you.
Magnolia Market was also featured on Fixer Upper. This made the market more popular with shoppers from all across the country.
Waco is also known for its Dr. Pepper Museum. The museum is dedicated entirely to Dr. Pepper. It was the location where Dr. Pepper was first bottled in the 20th century.
You can also browse the exhibits and purchase merchandise. You must visit the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, which is located in this area.
Waco is a great option for day trips to Austin due to its close proximity (about an hour and a quarter drive) and its many opportunities for walking, shopping and relaxing.
Houston
If you want a change of scenery and atmosphere (in a good way, of course), Houston is a stunning option. Beautiful sights, sounds, and people make Houston a vibrant, diverse city.
It’s a delight for the senses, particularly those responsible for taste. There are many great restaurants and bars in the area.
After you have had enough of eating out, you can walk around museums and burn calories. You’ll also learn a lot. These venues include The Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Natural Sciences. The Children’s Museum is another.
You shouldn’t overlook the Space Center. It is one of the most well-known facilities of its kind in the country.
It’s worth mentioning that many of these educational facilities are either free or very affordable. There are many activities and venues available for those who travel alone, with their family, or with their partner.
Houston has no problems. We love each other more now than ever! It will take less than three hours to plan your day trip from Austin to Houston.

Georgetown
Located just a bit north of Austin, Georgetown is an amazing destination if you have a thing for small-town vibes like myself. The town’s historic downtown is also a highlight.
This area of the downtown is known as the’most beautiful square in the state’. They are not far off the truth. The Victorian-style buildings and the wealth of history in this area are what I loved.
You can take a tour at Williamson Country Courthouse, Williamson Museum, Georgetown Art Center and other historic places to get a deeper dive into the history of the city and the state.
If history is not on your agenda, it’s okay. There are many places to shop, eat, taste delicious wine and enjoy other hedonistic activities.
For adventure-seekers, Blue Hole is just five minutes from the square. You can also go on picnics, take in the trails, and much more.
The Inner Space Caverns are another Georgetown highlight. These caverns were accidentally discovered. They are beautiful sights to behold. You will be captivated by it for a lifetime.
If this piqued your interest, consider that the driving distance to Georgetown from Austin is just around 35 minutes.
Dallas
As the state’s third most populous city, it gives you the metropolitan feelings you may want in your day trips. Dallas is not a popular choice for day trips from Austin. But that could change.
One of my favorite things about Dallas is its diverse food scene. There are many different cuisines to choose from (not just Texan barbecue).
I’m also a big football fan. If you are like me, you might want to spice up your day with a game of Dallas Cowboys.
Activities like these are great for traveling with friends. They will keep you energized and give you some bonding time. It’s important to note Dallas’s historical significance. In 1963, this city sadly witnessed the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
If you are interested in learning more about the history behind it all, the Sixth Floor Museum can be a great place to begin your explorations. It takes approximately 3 hours to travel from Austin to Dallas. Plan your trip accordingly.

Luckily, Austin has a great transportation network that enables people to move inside the city and near it. Driving a car is the obvious choice.
No matter if you rent or own a car, you can use a map to navigate you way to the many day trips around Austin. You can also grab a taxi to take your luggage.
But there are other options that may be cheaper. Public transportation is one of these options. Many bus routes lead to major cities like Dallas or Houston.
You can also consider taking a train along one of the many railroad lines that connect different areas across the country. You can also rent a scooter, or ride a bicycle if you are close to your destination.
