Fishing at the Pismo Beach Pier
Anglers can target silver and walleye surfperch and catch occasional halibut while fishing at the Pismo Beach Pier. The surfperch typically like small anchovies but will also take worms and bloodworms. The larger halibut are typically caught on live bait, a white croaker leader rigged on a high/low line. In summer, surfperch and queenfish may also join the action.
While pismo is known for clams, the pier also has a reputation for producing a wide variety of fish. Barred surfperch are the most popular species, but the pier attracts other fish species as well, including yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker, corbina, and calico surfperch. Anglers can also find rainbow, pile, and rubberlip seaperch in the pier’s shallow end pilings.
Anglers can choose from several fishing decks and can even try their luck on the pilings. The pier is also accessible to heavy surf, which is great for catching perch. A California fishing license is not necessary to fish at the Pismo Beach Pier. The seawater spray indicates that there is plenty of food in the water. If you’d prefer to spend more time in nature, you can check out the public park. This 11-acre area used to have a concrete dinosaur, but this is no longer the case. It still offers beautiful scenery and natural features. The bluff overlooking the ocean is steep enough to make it an excellent spot for walking and exploring.
